DT | Children of farmers who were hurt by Egay will get P15,000 for school | LAOAG CITY – After Typhoon Egay hit, the office of Senator Imee Marcos is helping qualified dependents pay for school so that the children of farmers and fishermen can stay in school.

The Provincial Education Office (PEO) at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena here started taking application forms on Wednesday. Each person who gets the money will get PHP15,000.

Carolyn Juan-Agcaoili, an education research assistant at the PEO, said in an interview, “The programme is open to incoming college students whose farmers or fishermen were destroyed by Super Typhoon Egay.”

Local government units told people about the special education help on the radio and through social media. As a result, hundreds of students went to the Centennial Area to turn in their applications.

The financial help is available to all real residents of Ilocos Norte who are college students or are about to start college. They must be a certified dependent of a farmer or fisherman who lost their job because of Egay.

After visiting the storm-damaged parts of the province on July 28, the senator promised that no Ilocano student would be unable to go to school because of Egay’s damage.

In a statement, she said, “We are also figuring out how much tuition help farm families need, and I will give both cash and goods to help them pay for school.”

As of August 1, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council estimated that the total damage was over PHP10 billion, with PHP579,081,757 worth of damage to farmland, mostly rice, maize, and other high-value commercial crops, as well as fisheries, livestock, and poultry.(via PNA)
