National Heritage Month 2026 Opens in Angono, Celebrating Filipino Culture, Arts, and Heritage Preservation | ANGONO, RIZAL — The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), in partnership with cultural institutions and local government stakeholders, officially launched the celebration of National Heritage Month 2026 on May 10 at the Loyola Retreat House – Spirituality and Art Center (LRH-SACA) in Angono, Rizal, gathering cultural leaders, artists, heritage advocates, government officials, educators, and members of the creative sector in a vibrant showcase of Filipino identity and heritage.

Held under the banner of preserving and promoting the country’s rich cultural legacy, the NHM 2026 Kick-Off Ceremony featured a series of artistic performances, cultural presentations, keynote messages, and ceremonial activities aimed at strengthening awareness and appreciation of Philippine heritage among Filipinos and future generations.

The event opened with an assembly followed by a prelude at the Kaagapay Monument led by Jan Nico Macapagal and a ceremonial opening hosted by Mikko Dela Cruz. Fr. Rene Pio Javellana, SJ, Vice President of Loyola Retreat House – Spirituality and Art Center Angono, led the opening prayer and blessing.

One of the highlights of the program was the keynote address of Eric B. Zerrudo, PhD, Chairman and Executive Director of the NCCA, who emphasized the importance of cultural preservation, heritage education, and community participation in sustaining the nation’s identity amid modernization and globalization.

Special messages were also delivered by prominent cultural and religious leaders, including Most Rev. Ruperto C. Santos, DD, Bishop of Antipolo, represented by Fr. Peter Ymari C. Balatbat of the Diocesan Commission for Cultural Heritage of the Church, and Rizal Governor Nina Ricci A. Ynares. Angono Mayor Gerardo V. Calderon welcomed guests and participants, reaffirming the municipality’s role as the “Art Capital of the Philippines.”

The kick-off celebration featured a diverse lineup of cultural activities, including the parade, “Sayaw sa Patio,” the opening of the PETROS exhibit at San Pedro Calungsod Hall, choral performances by the Angono Chorale Ensemble, and a concert by the Angono National Symphonic Band. Traditional dance performances such as “Sayaw ng Bati” further highlighted the municipality’s artistic heritage and local traditions.

Another significant moment during the ceremony was the unveiling of commemorative National Heritage Month stamps by Postmaster General Maximo C. Sta. Maria III, symbolizing the continued recognition of Philippine heritage in national consciousness.

Organizers said the event aimed to inspire stronger collaboration among government agencies, cultural organizations, academic institutions, artists, tourism stakeholders, and local communities in safeguarding tangible and intangible heritage assets across the country.

The choice of Loyola Retreat House – Spirituality and Art Center Angono as the venue also underscored the growing importance of heritage spaces that integrate spirituality, culture, architecture, and the arts. Established in 1964 and known for its historical and cultural significance in Rizal, the retreat house continues to serve as a center for spiritual formation, artistic expression, and cultural preservation.

Industry observers noted that National Heritage Month contributes significantly to the development of the Philippine cultural and creative industries by promoting cultural tourism, supporting local artists, preserving historical sites, and encouraging public engagement in heritage conservation initiatives. The month-long celebration is also expected to boost local tourism activities and strengthen regional cultural programs nationwide.

The program concluded with awarding ceremonies, closing remarks from cultural heritage leaders, and a finale performance celebrating Filipino artistry and national pride.

National Heritage Month is observed annually every May pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 439, reinforcing the country’s commitment to preserving and promoting the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage for future generations.
